This series has a lot of books, I’m now up to book 6. I will read them all, Hutchison maintains his excellent sense of humor along the way. Cal Carver, our two-bit conman hero, is mistaken for a vicious killer and snatched from an Earth prison just as Earth is pretty much wiped out. He teams up with quirky aliens to take on impossible missions, and in spite of his Maxwell Smart-ish overconfidence (and incompetence) manages to get out of trouble long enough to get into the next scrape. This is really light reading (kind of like Douglas Adams but not so British); there’s some clever sci-fi and interesting villains along the way.
